Not sure if that has been answered and I am new forgive me for my ignorance Can NxFilter be used for remote machines that are taken home for the day or does the clients have to communicate with the server all the time? I am not using any vpn for the machines that are taken home. I know there is an agent but Im guessing the agent just does recursive queries against the NxFilter server. Does the agent cache anything or what if the server is down etc.

Yes. We have an agent called NxProxy. It does not perform recursive queries. Instead, it sends policy queries to NxFilter over TCP/443 and TCP/80. For DNS resolution, it uses the upstream DNS server of the network it is currently connected to. If it cannot connect to NxFilter, it stops sending policy queries until the connection is restored.
You can also use the DoH service for remote filtering: https://tutorial.nxfilter.org/doc/en...over-https.php
However, when using the DoH service for remote filtering, automatic recovery depends on the operating system.
