  • Licensing question

    Hi

I have a 24 user network that is now getting "Too many users for license" as the trial period has expired.
It says "free for up to 25 users"
Thing is there are only 24 users, 5 or 6 at any given time using the internet.

I have looked at the "USAGE REPORT" but it shows anywhere from 27 to 53 IP's, obviously this is counting printers, AP's, switches etc as it is a flat network.
Not a great way of calculating licenses as there is a DHCP server with short lease times and will likely cause issues if purchasing 60 user license as then it may go over randomly due to not accurately calculating users by IP.
Also the Request Sum / Request Count does not accurately line up when looking at Block Sum/Block Count/Domain Count as there are some systems and apps i.e. Antivirus that use CDN's or are generally noisy i.e. Office365 services. To the network is heavily filtered and only allows access to "work related" sites and services.

I will likely be told to use the "Globlist" but will this affect all the "CUSTOM CATEGORY" entries I have created i.e. reset them?

Is there any way around this?
There is no option to segment the network yet as there are some legacy systems preventing this or is the "Globlist" the only way forward?

You can't satisfy everybody. And we can say that Jahaslist license is very cheap by the market standard. That free license is actually for home use. We just allow it to be used in other places if they don't go over the limit.

Among those numbers, some are from in-memory counting and some are from data counting. This is for the performance. There may be some discrepancy but if it's not too big that'd be OK.

If you want to decrease those license counting, then bypass domains with Bypass Filter, Bypass Authentication, Bypass Logging. They will be excluded from request counting for license.

You can go with Goblist. You can add up to 300,000 domains into your custom categories. But if they are in Ads, Porn, Phishing/Malware, you better add those domains into Jahaslist directly on 'Classifier > Jahaslist'. There's no limit in that way and Globlist is just a part of Jahaslist.

Thank you for the reply and info.
I refer your product to several clients and have written a popular howto for NXFilter setup, I am a huge fan and push your system to other IT guys / companies all the time.
So I really appreciate this, the client literally only has 5 or 6 active internet users at a time and currently I cannot justify it, but will obv push for licensing as they grow. (Perhaps you should look into a MSP/reseller model in the future unless you already have this in place 😉).

I have a separate question if you could please advise on wildcards, i.e. something.domain.com, something.something.domain.com, something.something.something.domain.com does the wildcard *.domain.com apply to all three examples or would I need to do i.e. *.domain.com, *.*.domain.com, *.*.*.domain.com?

      Kind Regards

For MSP, I think the problem is that it's too cheap for reseller business. You need to have some room for your profit. That's the problem. You better go with some kind of managed service and provide direct tech-support. Many people don't know much about this kind of product and this is especially true for small offices or schools.

It includes all the subdomains. And if it's for Jahaslist, if you add domains into it, even if you don't add '*', it still include all the subdomains.

About reseller business, if you are interested in it, contact us at support@nxfilter.org. We actually have several resellers. We can let you try it.
