  • NxMapper Issue when Installing

    Hello everyone,

Inside, i'm running cmd and getting this prompt:

The test returns success, but when i press start:

And indeed NxMapper is not in my running services and following event in Event Viewer:

Faulting application name: nxmapper.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x6634e2ed
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Why didn't you install it using its setup exe file? If you use zip file, you need to install it as a service manually. It has instsvc.bat file in /nxrelay/bin directory and you can run it with Admin privilege. However, it'd be better to install it using exe package.

Oh okay I installed it, but am I supposed to do anything other than enter the NxFilter IP and start the service? Because the user authentication is not working unless I turn on CxLogon

Did anybody login to your AD? There should be some user action like login event for NxMapper to detect.

There were many AD logins. NxMapper is installed but NxRelay isn't.
Oh so I must them both? The documentation mentions NxRelay with NxCloud, but not with NxFilter

Sorry, it's NxMapper. Do you use NxFilter with NxMapper this time?

There's log files under /nxmapper/log directory. You might need to look into them or send them to me at support@nxfilter.org.

I'm sorry but the log files are empty. NxMapper file is empty
NxWrapper only says: "INFO Starting NxMapper"

            Hello, yes.
Sorry for the confusion. I realize i said in a previous post I was using NxCloud, but I'm now using NxFilter and testing it out.
I have installed NxMapper and it's pretty straightforward.
When I click test on the GUI, it says succeeded and the service is running.
However, the log files are still empty and user auth is not working.

It is installed on your DC and there're users login/logout in AD? You can try to login/logout from a PC joined in AD.

Yes it is installed on both my DCs with user logging in and out all the time.
I have even made dozens of logins/logouts for testing and still nothing.

What i'm looking for is for one agent to be installed on my DCs and take care of the user authentication process.
I belive, correct me if i'm mistaken, that Nxmapper is what i'm looking for because installing CxLogon on all AD joined computers would be too much.

You need to see this kind of log:

              Code:
              INFO [05-29 15:29:52] - Program.ReadIasLogFile, We read C:\Windows\system32\LogFiles/IN1905.log
              DEBUG [05-29 15:29:52] - Program._SendUname, /LHU 192.168.0.24 ee4f0b444df63abe08397e91c951afe1
              INFO [05-29 15:29:52] - Program.ReadIasLogFile, A uname has been sent, uname = eastman, ip = 192.168.0.24.
              INFO [05-29 15:29:53] - Program.ReadIasLogFile, We read C:\Windows\system32\LogFiles/IN1905.log
              DEBUG [05-29 15:29:53] - Program.SendUname, Already sent, uname = eastman.
You can turn on debugging by changing log level INFO to DEBUG inside /nxmapper/conf/log4net.xml

Yes. But it might be better to start it on CMD using /nxmapper/bin/startup.bat. Your service might not be running.

If you only see one line in the log file, it might not have been started properly. When it starts,

                Code:
                INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program._main, Starting NxMapper 4.0.7.
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program.deleteOldLogFiles, Deleting file, C:\Program Files (x86)\nxmapper\log\nxmapper.log-2019-05-24.
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program.deleteOldLogFiles, Deleting file, C:\Program Files (x86)\nxmapper\log\nxmapper.log-2019-05-29.
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Config{server = 192.168.0.104, refreshSession = True, excludeAdmin = False}
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program._main, MyServer started. Port = 19092.
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program._main, ReadEventLog started.
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program._main, ReadNetSession started.
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program._main, ReadIasLogFile started.
                 INFO [01-07 20:15:00] - Program._main, RefreshSession started.
You can check if it's running in Windows Service Manager or Task Manager. The process name is NxMapper.

You are supposed install CxLogon using GPO. That's why we made MSI package. And there are other options like NxLogon and VxLogon which you can launch from GPO.

                  Hello again,

I tried again with yet another user. NxMapper logs are still empty.
                  No authentication working.
                  NxMapper service is running.

Just to be sure, is there anything I should do other than setup nxmapper, start the service and give it the IP of my NxFilter?

                  Edit: nxwrapper log:
[2025-01-07 14:44:34] ERROR Couldn't find Java in system path. We try to start the service anyway.
                  [2025-01-07 14:44:34] INFO Starting NxMapper

Is there somewhere specific I should install Java or just install it on my DC?

Did you not install Java? If you install NxMapper using EXE package, it checks your Java installation. If you didn't install it, install JRE on DC.

                      Okay, i get it.
                      I did install Java later.
I checked on both my DCs' event viewer and each time I start the NxMapper service, it automatically stops after 3 seconds. The issue is on both DCs, so probably not an issue with the DCs themselves.

Did you see any message? Maybe you can try to start it on CMD using startup.bat.
